Navigating Change, Finding Opportunity: My First Three Months at MC Design

Over the past three months, I’ve had the privilege of stepping into the role of Business Development at MC Design & Contracting – a company whose 35-year legacy in South Africa’s industrial landscape continues to inspire confidence and ambition. What this journey has taught me so far is simple: even in the most challenging markets, there is always opportunity for those willing to adapt, collaborate, and innovate.

A Market at Its Toughest – And a Company Built for Resilience

With more than 12 years in the automotive space, I have never seen the market as strained as it is today. Yet MC Design’s heritage shows that resilience is not just something we practice – it’s part of who we are. Strong customer relationships, consistent service excellence, and a reputation built over decades have made navigating this downturn feel purposeful rather than discouraging.

A Culture That Makes All the Difference

One of the most refreshing aspects of joining MC Design has been the culture. Inclusive, collaborative, and grounded – this environment made it incredibly easy to feel at home. My visits to our Pretoria and Durban branches gave me the chance to see firsthand the passion and ownership our teams bring to their work. Those trips also came with scenic drives through the South African countryside, fresh perspectives, shared laughter, and meaningful conversations with our branch representatives.

Across every visit and interaction, one theme stood out: both new and existing clients are genuinely receptive to what MC Design brings to the table. That level of engagement is energising.

Connecting With the Industry: Events That Shaped My Perspective

A major highlight has been attending some of the most influential events in our sector:

  • NAACAM Show 2025 – A standout networking experience. Credit to Renai Moothilal and his team for uniting the industry under one roof. If you’re in automotive manufacturing, the 2026 show should be on your calendar.
  • South African Automotive Week – Hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay for the first time, this event delivered high-level engagement with government stakeholders and industry leaders. The energy was unmatched and reaffirmed the scale of opportunity ahead.
  • SAIMC Summit – A celebration of innovation in industrial automation, featuring world-class African expertise. The insights I gained, and the people I connected with – will directly influence how I shape my approach going forward.

These events weren’t just networking opportunities; they were reminders of how dynamic and globally competitive our local industry truly is.

Stepping Into Digital Marketing: A New Challenge and an Exciting Win

Moving into a digital marketing leadership role was never something I expected – but it has quickly become one of the most exciting parts of my portfolio. Coming from an engineering background, the creative process challenged me in ways I didn’t anticipate. It gave me a newfound respect for the strategic thinking that goes into brand storytelling, design, and digital presence.

After a careful and competitive search, we unanimously selected SimonSAYS as our digital marketing partner. Their creative energy, strategic clarity, and proven track record made them the obvious choice. The quality of their recent content already speaks for itself, and I’m confident that our partnership will elevate MC Design’s digital identity in the months ahead.

Exploring New Markets: The Road Ahead Looks Bright

My recent trip to Pretoria opened doors to several untapped markets – conversations that hint at incredible opportunities for MC Design. These interactions reinforced what I’ve felt since joining: despite external pressures, the future is full of potential for companies willing to evolve and lead with integrity.

Looking Forward

As I continue my journey at MC Design, I’m excited for what lies ahead – new partnerships, new innovations, and new ways to deliver value to our clients. If the first three months are anything to go by, the road ahead promises growth, learning, and meaningful impact.
